MEXICO: Still a Top Destination
The Mexico Tourism Board reported that more than 22 million international travelers visited Mexico last year, up 2% from 2010, despite the negative press that continues to come out of the country. But to put things in perspective, most of the visitors coming into Mexico go to the southern resort areas, such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen—more than 2,000 miles away from any of the isolated crime to the North. In fact, there are no U.S. travel warnings in Quintana Roo including Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Riviera Maya, Cozumel and Tulum, where most meetings and incentives are held and where all but two of the Palace Resorts reside. (one in the Dominican Republic and the other in Puerto Vallarta) Mexico City is also safe.
“There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding tourist travel to the resort areas in Mexico. My team and I have operated numerous, highly successful, incentive trips for U.S. corporations and associations to Mexico over the last 20 years. Our attendees have enjoyed themselves without undo concern about safety,” says Michelle Otting, President, Incentive Travel Master International, Newport Beach, CA.”Border towns and Acapulco are the areas where there seems to be issues of concerns. My clients are still expressing the desire for the upscale resorts in Mexico.
“Travelers should exercise common sense with regard to safely no matter where they are travelling,” she adds.
To be sure, guest safety is a top priority at all Palace Resorts. Security guards are located at the front gate and confirm each person that enters is a hotel guest. The fact that Palace Resorts are all inclusive is an added benefit. Everything you need, from the restaurants, to the beach and pools, to the array of water sports is right there on property. Several major destinations have special “tourist police” who speak English and. the first-class hotels have their own security.
“I personally felt very safe,” says Sharon Knowles, Manager, NBIM. “The Vallarta Palace is a secured resort, but we also went off property to downtown where we delighted in the shopping, restaurants, and people watching. I have no hesitation about going back.”
